Tributes

Rudy, in 1986, I had the opportunity to spend several months in your office in Winnipeg. It was my first trip abroad, my first flight, and my first exposure to a different way of thinking about planning, design, and communities.

The experience in your office broadened my perspective and left a lasting impression that still influences my work today. More than forty years later, I can still recognize the same human-centered thinking in your work on aging, community, and dignity.

Thank you for the inspiration then—and for the thought leadership you continue to provide today.
- Gunnar Dennewill, Healthcare Infrastructure Strategy, Scalable Hospital Systems, Lifecycle Cost Optimization, June 2026

Rudy Friesen’s Report [commissioned by the Board of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre in Winnipeg, Canada to study best practices in 14 areas of long-term care: models of care; staffing practices; recruitment & retention; facility design; technology; infection control; community integration; accessibility; dietary; programming; wellness; geriatric psychology; alternative therapies; and spiritual services] is an excellent, in-depth outline of leading-edge best practices in long-term care.”
- Don Aronovitch, Chair of the Simkin Centre Planning Committee, April 2022
